Emergency chimney leak tarping is for the call no one wants to make: water coming through the ceiling next to the chimney during a storm. Our first job is to stop the water. The permanent chimney leak repair comes after the roof is dry.

When it is safe to get on the roof, our crew wraps the chimney and the roof slope above it in a heavy reinforced tarp, runs the top edge up under the shingles at least one course above the chimney, and fastens it with wood battens screwed to the roof deck, not just weighted with bricks. For a crown or open flue letting water in from the top, we cap it with a temporary cover.

We will not climb a steep, iced or lightning-struck roof in the middle of a storm. In those cases we tell you how to contain the water inside, move belongings, and shut off power to any light fixture near the leak, and we come as soon as conditions allow.

Before we leave, we photograph what we found so you have a record for your insurer. Once things dry out, we come back to do the real fix, which is usually step flashing replacement, counter flashing repair or chimney crown repair. Call (833) 583-1301.

How a chimney leak job goes

Four steps to chimney flashing repair in Los Angeles, CA

01

Call and describe the leak

Tell us where the water shows up and when. A stain that only appears in wind-driven rain points somewhere different than water in the firebox.

02

We find the entry point

Our crew checks the crown, the brick face and the step and counter flashing, because a leak at the chimney is not always a flashing problem.

03

You get a plain written scope

We tell you what failed, what we plan to replace and what it costs before any shingle comes off.

04

We fix it with metal, not caulk

New step flashing under each shingle course and counter flashing set into a ground mortar joint. Photos before and after.

Chimney Flashing Repair FAQs

Questions about chimney flashing repair

Questions we hear about Emergency Chimney Leak Tarping in Los Angeles, CA.

Call (833) 583-1301
How do I know if my chimney leak is flashing or something else?
Look at when it leaks. A stain that shows up during wind-driven rain from one direction often points to the flashing on that side. Water that shows up in the firebox or on the damper usually comes from the top, through an open flue or a cracked crown. Damp brick inside the attic after a long soaking rain points to porous masonry. Our crew checks all three before recommending chimney flashing repair.
What is the difference between step flashing and counter flashing?
Step flashing is the set of small L-shaped pieces tucked under each shingle course along the side of the chimney. Counter flashing is the metal set into the brick that laps down over the step flashing. The two work as a pair. One without the other leaks.
Do I need a chimney cricket?
Building code calls for a cricket on the uphill side of any chimney wider than 30 inches, unless the chimney sits on the ridge. Even on a narrower chimney, a cricket helps if you see leaves piling up or water ponding behind the brick after a storm.
My house has no chimney. Can you still help with a roof leak?
Yes. Much of our work is wall flashing, skylight flashing, vent pipe boots and valley flashing, which use the same methods as a chimney. On homes without masonry chimneys, those are where most leaks start.
Why does my chimney leak only in heavy storms?
Light rain runs off. Heavy, wind-driven rain gets pushed sideways into loose counter flashing, through open mortar joints and into an uncapped flue. If your leak only shows up in big storms, the flashing and the brick face are the first things we check.
